We hiked across the border from Lagodekhi to cross back into Azerbaijan and took a taxi to Zacatela.  Lonely Planet and a semi-helpful/semi-scheming taxi driver guided us to Car where we ate lunch in a restaurant of treehouses.  Being back in Azerbaijan meant eating kebabs.  The driver then took us to the bus station where we were to catch a bus to Şeki.  He told us it looked like we missed the last bus, and when Olga went to inquire at the ticket counter, he told her no no no, he would ask on our behalf.  Of course, Olga asked herself, and we got on the last bus.

I always went to the original ‘Snice on 8th Ave and 13th St. in Manhattan, but this time I was on a mission to buy a baby carrier for a friend and thus, I decided to try the ‘Snice in Park Slope, BK.  Luckily the menu at this fabulous vegetarian eatery/bakery/cafe is nearly identical.  The Vegan Panini is composed of pesto, smoked tofu, and sun-dried tomatoes on the best, crunchy ciabatta.  It continues to be my favorite sandwich in NYC.  The Thai peanut salad is another steady ‘Snice offering.

Also, if you enjoy sandwiches and scanned things, you should check out scanwiches.

Also knowing I love Vietnamese, Anna (a Denver native) pointed me to New Saigon on Federal Blvd.  Heidi led us on her own culinary tour of Denver which started on Federal.  I could only remember that Anna’s restaurant had Saigon in the title.  Luckily for Denverites, Federal is swarming with Vietnamese restaurants.   We ended up at Saigon Bowl which was not at all disappointing.  There were also a plethora of taco trucks on Federal, solidifying a spot for Denver in the top 5 cities to consider moving to.

When I want a satisfying, sweet, easy lunch:

Brown Rice Tortilla w/ banana, tahini, and agave.  I feel like it might be missing an essential ingredient.  What?

Olga says there’s a Russian saying that says how you ring in the New Year is how you’ll spend the next year.  For me, that means I’ll spend the year warm, comfortable, and asleep (I wish!). I’d rather think that how you welcome the first day of the New Year is how the rest of the year will be.   In my case, I’ll spend the year with friends over a cup of tea.  This New Year’s day I hung with my friend, Wayde, in Brooklyn Heights who makes a perfect cup of tea.  I think the best part of tea is the process.  Wayde’s  professionally precise process is as follows:

1.  Boil water in fancy kettle with temperature control so you can get it to just below boiling.

2.  Put quality black tea in fancy tea steeper.  Add almost boiling water.

3.  Be precise about steeping time.  For our black Emperor’s tea from China, 3min 45 seconds was the sweet spot.  Fancy iphone tea app not necessarily required, but helpful.

4.  Pour. Enjoy.  NO MILK OR SUGAR.
